BS 5837 surveys and reports.

The British Standard BS 5837 provides comprehensive guidelines for managing trees in relation to design, demolition, and construction projects. This standard emphasizes the importance of assessing and protecting trees on development sites to ensure their successful retention and integration into new developments. The British Standard BS 5837, which provides guidelines on trees in relation to design, demolition, and construction, is currently undergoing a significant revision. The draft for the updated standard was released for public consultation in 2024, reflecting advancements in arboricultural, planning, and construction practices since its last update in 2012.

The Tree Survey.

A comprehensive tree survey is a vital component of the development planning process. It involves a detailed evaluation of each tree’s species, condition, age, and potential lifespan. This data is essential for making informed decisions about tree retention or removal. A crucial output of this process is the Tree Constraints Plan, which delineates Root Protection Areas (RPAs) to ensure that construction activities minimize impact on the existing tree population.

Tree Protection Plan.

Following the survey, a Tree Protection Plan is developed. We work closely with other professionals, to draw up a Tree Protection Plan. This plan outlines measures to safeguard trees during construction, such as the installation of protective barriers and specifying appropriate construction techniques near RPAs. An Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) is also conducted to evaluate the potential effects of the proposed development on the existing tree population and to propose mitigation strategies where necessary. Additionally, the standard advocates for new tree planting and ongoing site monitoring to promote long-term ecological sustainability.

Arboricultural Method Statement.

An Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) provides a structured approach to executing tree-related measures during construction. It details operations such as demolition, temporary ground protection, material storage, and foundation installation while ensuring compliance with BS 5837:2012 standards.
